]]>
Francis Galluppi is one of the hottest directors in Hollywood. After his smash debut The Last Stop in Yuma County topped the VOD charts and landed on several top 10 films of 2024 lists, he signed on to helm the next Evil Dead film as well as a Western to be produced by Bosque Ranch, Taylor Sheridan’s production company. Galluppi hates the term “overnight success” – he recognizes how much work goes into making a great film, and he certainly paid his dues. After a long career of playing in Punk Rock bands, Francis pivoted hard to filmmaking after breaking his wrist just a couple of years ago.

The production of Last Stop proves that persistence, creativity, and a bit of boldness can turn a dream into reality. With a budget of under $1 million, a cast of his dreams, and an unforgettable act of generosity from a close friend, Francis’s story offers valuable lessons for aspiring filmmakers. Here are the key takeaways from our conversation, touching on writing with intention, unconventional fundraising, and casting without compromise.

1. Writing Stories Rooted in Place

For Francis, location isn’t just a setting; it’s the seed from which his stories grow. The inspiration for The Last Stop in Yuma County began with the desert landscape, which shaped the mood, tone, and narrative of the film. Francis emphasizes the importance of grounding a story in a location, especially when working on a limited budget.

“It’s so important to write around the resources you have access to,” he advises. Francis created a script that was both logistically feasible and artistically compelling. The vast, open desert became a character in the film, amplifying the tension and isolation at the story’s heart.

Francis encourages writers to take a similar approach. “If you force yourself to work within your means, you’ll grow as a storyteller,” he explains. Writing around accessible locations not only saves money but also fosters creativity by turning constraints into opportunities.

2. The Bold Act of Selling a House to Fund a Film

In a move that underscores the sacrifices often required in independent filmmaking, Francis’s close friend and producer, James Claeys, sold his house to finance the movie. Initially, James had offered $50,000 to help kickstart the project. As the script grew in ambition, however, it became clear that additional funding was necessary.

“We were stuck,” Francis recalls. “No one wanted to finance a movie from a first-time filmmaker.” Despite his hesitation, Francis eventually agreed when James insisted on selling his home to fund the production.

This extraordinary gesture reflects the deep trust and belief James had in Francis and his vision for the film. It also serves as a reminder of the unconventional paths filmmakers often take to bring their projects to life.

Francis doesn’t recommend this approach to everyone but stresses the importance of believing in your project. “There’s no one right way to make a movie,” he says. “The rules are there to be broken, and sometimes you have to take big risks to create something worthwhile.”

3. Securing the Dream Cast

For The Last Stop in Yuma County, Francis had a specific cast in mind while writing the script. Securing these actors, however, wasn’t an easy feat, especially for a first-time director with no major credits.

Determined to bring his dream cast on board, Francis wrote personal letters to each actor, explaining why they were perfect for the roles and how much their involvement would mean to him. His casting director helped deliver the letters, and to Francis’s surprise, many of the actors responded positively.

“I was a fan of these actors long before this project,” he says. “Writing those letters felt vulnerable, but it also showed my passion and commitment.”

The key to his success? Persistence and genuine admiration. Francis advises aspiring filmmakers to never hesitate when reaching out to their dream collaborators. “If you believe in your project, other people will too,” he says. “You just have to show them why it’s special.”

Making the Impossible Possible

Francis’s journey is a masterclass in independent filmmaking: writing with intention, embracing creative risks, and building a team of collaborators who believe in the project. His experiences underscore a crucial lesson for filmmakers—there are no set rules for making a movie.

Through sheer determination and the support of his community, Francis turned The Last Stop in Yuma County into a critically acclaimed film that climbed to number three on VOD charts. His story is a testament to the power of passion and the lengths people will go to for the art they love.

For anyone dreaming of making their first feature, Francis offers this advice: “Be prepared, stay open to collaboration, and remember that no one owes you anything. Make your movie because you have to.”

Pro Video Coalition sent contributor Alec C. Cohen to Cinegear Atlanta to see new developments in film tech.

In the dynamic world of filmmaking, lighting plays a pivotal role in bringing stories to life. The right tools can make or break a shoot, and Light Sock, a brand known for its innovative lighting accessories, is setting a new standard for simple, soft light. At the RST Visions booth at Cinema Atlanta, I had the opportunity to explore their latest offerings, and here’s why these tools deserve a place in every filmmaker’s kit.

Designed by Filmmakers for Filmmakers

Light Sock products are crafted with a deep understanding of what filmmakers need on set. It’s one of those classic, “by filmmakers, for filmmakers” brands that ensure each product is both practical and high-performing. Notably, the Light Sock Domes and their new Mini line provide versatile solutions for various lighting scenarios, making them indispensable for directors of photography (DPs) and gaffers alike.

Light Sock's Lineup - Versatile Tools for Gaffer's & DP's 3

The Light Sock Dome: Versatility Meets Efficiency

The Light Sock Dome stands out as a multifunctional lighting accessory. Its design is ideal for creating eye lights, fill lights, or even ambient key lights, depending on your set’s requirements. The Dome features a baby pin in the back and a magnetic cross system, enabling compatibility with up to four DMG Dashes/MC Pros, or three Hydra Panels. For the thriftier filmmakers, these should also comfortably fit the new amaran Ace’s. This adaptability ensures that the Light Sock Dome can seamlessly integrate no matter your lighting setup.

For those familiar with the DMG Dot, the Dome offers a larger form factor, enhancing its utility without compromising portability. Plus, each unit ships with bleached muslin fabric, a staple for diffusing light, and additional options are expected to be available soon. The inclusion of a skirt further expands the Dome’s lighting capabilities, allowing for controlled light spill and precise illumination.

Light Sock's Lineup - Versatile Tools for Gaffer's & DP's 4

Introducing the Light Sock Mini: Compact and Powerful

The Light Sock Mini is another game-changer, especially for filmmakers who prioritize portability without sacrificing performance. With a linear form factor, the Mini supports up to two DMG Dashes or Mix Panels or one Hydra Panel, making it perfect for smaller setups or specialized lighting needs. Priced at $180, the Mini is an affordable yet powerful addition to any toolkit.

Its compact size and robust build make it suitable for a wide range of applications, from indie film sets to large-scale productions. Whether you’re shooting a commercial, a feature film, or a music video, the Mini offers reliable lighting in a streamlined package.

Why Every Filmmaker Needs Light Sock

 1. Durability and Design: Light Sock products are built to withstand the rigors of professional filmmaking. Their thoughtful design ensures ease of use and long-lasting performance.
 2. Adaptability: Whether you’re working with DMG Dashes, MK Pros, or Hydro Panels, Light Sock accessories accommodate a variety of lighting setups.
 3. Value for Money: With competitive pricing, Light Sock provides high-quality solutions that don’t break the bank.
 4. Enhanced Creativity: The tools’ versatility allows filmmakers to experiment with different lighting styles and achieve the perfect look for their scenes.

Real-World Applications

From creating soft, flattering light for interviews to achieving dramatic shadows in narrative films, Light Sock products cater to diverse filmmaking needs. Their ability to adapt to different lighting instruments makes them invaluable for DPs and gaffers who often work with tight schedules and budgets.

One standout feature of the Light Sock Dome is its potential for use as an eyelight. Eye lights add a captivating sparkle to a subject’s eyes, bringing characters to life on screen. Similarly, the Dome’s ability to function as a fill light ensures balanced illumination, reducing harsh shadows and enhancing the overall aesthetic of the shot.

The Mini, on the other hand, is perfect for accent lighting or filling in hard-to-reach areas. Its compact size and magnetic system make it a versatile tool that can be positioned in tight spots, adding depth and dimension to your visuals.

Looking Ahead

As Light Sock continues to innovate, filmmakers can expect more options to customize their lighting setups. The upcoming fabrics and accessories will only enhance the brand’s already impressive lineup, giving users even more creative freedom.

Conclusion

Light Sock’s products are more than just lighting accessories; they are tools that empower filmmakers to push boundaries and tell compelling stories. Whether you’re a seasoned DP or an aspiring gaffer, investing in the Light Sock Dome or Mini could elevate your craft to new heights.

Creating a feature film is no small feat, especially on a shoestring budget. Amanda Lundquist’s debut feature, Pinsky, is a testament to ingenuity, resourcefulness, and passion. The film, which explores Russian-American family dynamics with humor and heart, reflects Amanda’s ability to overcome industry obstacles with creativity. I sat down with her to chat through making her debut feature a reality despite a plethora of challenges.

1. Filming in Boston: Local Charm Meets Logistical Challenges

Boston served as the perfect backdrop for Pinsky, not just for its aesthetic appeal but also its personal connection to Amanda and her team. As a city rich in history and culture, Boston brought authenticity to the film’s story about Russian-American identity. Amanda’s family apartment became a key location, lending both cost savings and emotional resonance to the production.

However, filming in Boston wasn’t without its challenges. Securing permits and navigating the city’s unique vibe meant constant adaptation. Amanda recalls a humorous yet stressful encounter with an elderly shop owner who forgot about granting the crew permission to film, resulting in a last-minute negotiation fueled by bagels. This anecdote highlights the unpredictability of using local resources but also underscores the charm and humanity that independent films often capture.

Amanda’s advice for filmmakers considering non-traditional locations is clear: embrace the local character and resources, but plan meticulously. “Day one of development was all about figuring out what was possible,” she says, demonstrating the importance of flexibility and ingenuity.

2. Crowdfunding: A Leap of Faith

Crowdfunding was the financial backbone of Pinsky. Amanda and her collaborator Rebecca Karpovsky turned to Kickstarter to raise funds, a process that Amanda describes as both humbling and enlightening. Despite not reaching their original target, they embraced the amount raised and restructured the production around it. “We didn’t get half of what we hoped,” Amanda admitted, “but that limitation forced us to be resourceful.”

One significant upside of crowdfunding was the community it built around the film. Friends, family, and supporters became stakeholders, rooting for the project’s success. The campaign also cemented the team’s commitment to seeing the project through, regardless of the obstacles.

Amanda advises aspiring filmmakers to view crowdfunding not just as a fundraising tool but as a test of passion and dedication. “Once you take people’s money, you’re committed,” she says. This mindset helped the Pinsky team push forward, even when the budget ran tight during post-production. By leveraging their network, they secured discounts, favors, and volunteer work, proving that a supportive community is invaluable in independent filmmaking.

3. Creating Despite Industry Challenges

Amanda’s story is a reminder that filmmakers can’t wait for the industry to make room for them—they must carve out their own paths. With Pinsky, Amanda and Rebecca leaned on their close-knit circle of collaborators from high school and college, including friends who served as editor and production designer. The film’s DIY ethos extended to its casting process, where bold, direct outreach led to securing talented performers like Sam Jay and Larisa Popova.

Beyond Pinsky, Amanda continues to balance filmmaking with a day job in post-production, a reality for many indie creators. She acknowledges the industry’s struggles, from funding scarcity to an oversaturated content landscape, but insists on the importance of perseverance. “There’s no secret formula,” she says. “You just have to love the craft enough to make it work.”

Amanda encourages filmmakers to protect their creative energy by finding jobs that leave time and mental space for personal projects. Her advice: “Do a little bit every day and have a ritual, whether it’s mornings or late at night. Even 20 minutes can make a difference.” For Amanda, passion projects are worth the sacrifice, providing joy and fulfillment that outweigh the industry’s uncertainties.

The Joy of the Process

Despite the long hours, sleepless nights, and financial hurdles, Amanda emphasizes the joy of filmmaking. From writing to directing to post-production, she sees each stage as an opportunity for growth and collaboration. She also stresses the importance of celebrating small victories, like securing a location or wrapping a challenging shoot day.

“It’s a sacred thing,” Amanda reflects. “Even if you’re shooting a low-budget film, you’re lucky to have the chance to do it. So care more about the process than the product.” This philosophy not only kept her motivated through Pinsky but also set the tone for her second feature, Asking For It, co-directed with Rebecca Scott.

Conclusion

Amanda Lundquist’s journey with Pinsky is a blueprint for aspiring filmmakers looking to make meaningful work on a shoestring budget. By leveraging local resources, embracing the crowdfunding model, and committing to the craft regardless of industry constraints, Amanda proves that great stories can emerge from modest means.

For those embarking on their first feature, Amanda’s story offers hope and inspiration. Start with what you have, lean on your community, and let the process guide you. In her words, “Make cool stuff, support each other, and fix this industry with love and passion for the craft.”

]]>
The American Film Market (AFM) has launched in Las Vegas for the first time, bringing a bold new era to this renowned industry event. For nearly 45 years, AFM has called Santa Monica home, but the relocation to The Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas aims to streamline the market experience for buyers and sellers while shaking up its image. With an anticipated $1 billion in film sales and the participation of 286 companies from 34 countries, the stakes are high for this historic market’s first venture into the glitzy, high-energy city of Las Vegas.

A Market, Not a Festival: The Purpose of AFM

While AFM often draws comparisons to film festivals, its primary function is distinct—it’s a marketplace, not a showcase. Buyers and sellers converge to discuss, negotiate, and finalize distribution and ownership rights for films across genres and stages of development. Instead of red carpets and awards, AFM delivers private screenings, backroom negotiations, and closed-door meetings designed to push deals forward efficiently. This year, the atmosphere is buzzing with a glut of horror titles, anticipated blue-chip dramas, and a wide range of budgets, creating a perfect landscape for the intensive networking and dealmaking that define AFM’s mission.

Why Move to Las Vegas?

The move to Las Vegas was not taken lightly. Santa Monica had been a comfortable, albeit sometimes crowded, home for decades. However, logistical challenges and high costs motivated organizers, the Independent Film & Television Alliance (IFTA), to find a more accommodating and cost-effective solution. After reviewing multiple cities, The Palms Casino Resort was chosen for its ability to house all aspects of AFM under one roof—from the exhibition space and screening rooms to conference sessions. The Palms’ centralized setup allows buyers, sellers, and filmmakers to engage in business without the hassle of traveling between multiple venues. Based on initial reports and boots-on-the-ground observations, turnout seems as projected and exhibitors are overarchingly happy about the move to Vegas.

On Day 1, there were some minor logistical growing pains, but The Palms staff did a great job overall to get the show rolling. The biggest bottleneck here is the elevator system, with at least 20 floors needing to be covered by 5 elevators.

What Makes the 2024 AFM Unique?

This year’s AFM stands out not only due to its relocation but also because it takes place during a tense U.S. presidential election week. Security has been enhanced with teams patrolling the venue periphery to mitigate any potential disruptions related to the political climate. Additionally, this edition of AFM is happening in a single venue, a first in AFM history, and features over 200 screenings within the 14-screen Brenden Theatres multiplex at The Palms. The new location may change the overall vibe, but organizers are hopeful that the “big tent” concept will help AFM live up to its reputation as a significant business event in the film industry. Despite both Days 1 and 2 being in the heat of intense political decisions in America, spirits are high and attendees are focused on business.

From Students to Stars: A Diverse Gathering

Beyond its professional crowd, AFM 2024 offers unique opportunities for the next generation of industry professionals. For the first time, University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) film students are interning at the event. These students will receive credit and gain first-hand experience in film sales, distribution, and financing. This move underscores AFM’s commitment to fostering new talent and providing educational opportunities for those interested in the business side of the film industry. All the students I’ve met have been wonderful and the staff is doing a great job holding it down.

The Reality Behind AFM’s Allure

For independent filmmakers, AFM can be both an opportunity and a challenge. AFM encourages newcomers to attend, pitch their projects, and hope for a big break. Yet the reality is that AFM operates more as a venue for well-organized, pre-arranged meetings than spontaneous pitches. Many of the deals discussed in The Palms’ converted hotel rooms focus on completed films with a solid sales pitch, not on speculative projects. Though hopeful filmmakers circulate the floors trying to promote unproduced scripts, the structure of AFM favors projects that are market-ready.

The push for efficiency means that established buyers and sellers are booked weeks in advance, and deals happen behind closed doors in hotel suites rather than on a trade show floor. Filmmakers who did their homework and spent months prepping and reaching out are more likely to be successful than those cold pitching.

Conclusion: A Gamble Worth Taking?

AFM’s debut in Las Vegas may mark the beginning of a new chapter in its history. With significant deals in the works and a streamlined setup, AFM 2024 is more accessible, albeit different from its California roots. Las Vegas may lack the relaxed beachfront atmosphere of Santa Monica, but it brings an energy and accessibility that could ultimately benefit AFM and the industry at large. The big question, however, remains whether AFM will remain in Las Vegas for years to come.

For now, the film industry is watching closely, and with over $1 billion in projected sales, AFM 2024 might just roll a winning hand.

The good folks at amaran let me take the brand new Ace 25x for a spin, and I must say that I’m thoroughly impressed by this pocket light. While it’s certainly being marketed towards creators (garnering an absurd amount of views in their YouTube Commercial), I can see this light being extremely popular on independent film sets. Let’s dive in.

The amaran Ace 25x and Ace 25c are amaran’s latest innovations in portable LED lighting, offering reliable and affordable options for creators seeking high-quality illumination. With their compact design, versatile control features, and professional-grade color accuracy, these lights are ideal tools for amateur and professional videographers and photographers. Let’s dive into the specifications, features, and how these lights compare with other popular options in the market, like the Aputure MC Pro and DMG Dash.

The amaran Ace 25x is a bi-color LED panel light designed for flexibility and ease of use. Here’s a breakdown of its main specifications:

– CCT Range: The Ace 25x offers a color temperature range from 2,700K (warm tungsten) to 6,500K (cool daylight), allowing users to match indoor or outdoor lighting conditions easily. This range offers flexibility for various creative environments and scene settings.

– Color Rendering: With a Color Rendering Index (CRI) of 95+ and Television Lighting Consistency Index (TLCI) of 97+, the Ace 25x provides accurate color representation, essential for professional-grade video or photography work.

– Output: The Ace 25x boasts a high output, with 1140Lux at 1m @ 5600K. When compared to Aputure’s MC Pro, this figure is closer to 400Lux. Not to mention in boost mode, the Ace 25x will get even a touch brighter for spurts of time.

– Portability and Power Options: This light is powered via USB-C, a convenient and increasingly universal standard. The Ace 25x’s lightweight design and USB power option make it ideal for on-the-go shooting setups.

– Control Options: The Ace 25x can be controlled manually on the device or remotely using Aputure’s Sidus Link app on mobile, or the amaran app on computer or mobile.

The Amaran Ace 25c steps up from the 25x by offering RGBWW capabilities, making it highly versatile for creators needing a broader color palette. Here’s what makes the 25c stand out:

– Full RGBWW Color Control: The Ace 25c includes red, green, blue, warm white, and cool white LEDs, allowing users to achieve virtually any color within the RGB spectrum. This model supports creative lighting, from adding mood-specific colors to mimicking ambient light effects.

– Color Accuracy: Like the Ace 25x, the 25c boasts a CRI of 95+ and TLCI of 97+, maintaining Amaran’s high standards for color fidelity. This ensures that subjects are lit with realistic tones, preserving skin tones and other color-critical elements in a scene.

– Customizable Lighting Effects: With its RGBWW setup, the 25c includes built-in effects like color cycles, flashes, and other dynamic effects, which can be controlled via the Sidus Link and amaran apps. This feature is ideal for adding creative lighting effects without needing additional gear.

– Both lights have a new proprietary Ace Lock System.

Comparison with Competitors: Aputure MC Pro and DMG Dash

The Amaran Ace series is designed to be competitive in quality and price, particularly when compared to popular alternatives like the Aputure MC Pro and DMG Dash.

– Aputure MC Pro: Aputure’s MC Pro is a robust competitor in the RGBWW LED category, with a higher price point (typically around $199). It offers full RGBWW control and is compatible with Aputure’s Sidus Link app, similar to the Ace 25c. However, the Ace 25c offers comparable features, like RGB control and portability, at a slightly more affordable price, making it attractive to budget-conscious creators. They both have similar accessories available. The Ace is clearly targeting a creator audience with the Ace Lock, giving users less professional mounting options, and lacking in DMX control ability. The Ace also lacks an IP rating.

– DMG Dash: The DMG Dash is another premium portable LED with RGB functionality, often favored for its build quality and light intensity. With the Dash being priced around $269, the Ace is certainly the “budget” option, but for good reason. The Dash has incredible color reproduction and great control options + accessories. With all this said, the Ace is brighter than all of its competitors in this form factor.

Nitpicks:

There were a couple of small things that bugged me when playing with this light hands-on. As to be expected, the feel is pretty plastic. My biggest concern in using this on set is the magnet. I tried to stick it to a C-Stand like I normally would with an MC or MC Pro, but it didn’t mount well. The decision to put the magnet only on one side will be to the detriment of mounting, but I’m sure there are good design reasons for it.

The Ace does have a quarter-twenty on top, but I’m not a huge fan of the Ace lock and don’t see myself buying into this ecosystem. It doesn’t have a clear “click” for when it’s in place, and even though it feels relatively sturdy, to only roll it out with a mini-tripod and cold shoe adapter feels underwhelming. Folks will want to be mounting this onto stands right away, so not having a good baby pin adapter feels like a bit of a miss from the jump.

The output mode charged an Android phone pretty slowly but was not able to charge a USB-C or Thunderbolt iPhone. I’m curious how necessary this feature was and how often folx will use it. The boost mode seemed pretty impressive at first, but after further review of photometrics and in-person use, it doesn’t seem entirely necessary.

Price Point and Value

The Amaran Ace series is designed to provide creators with high-quality lighting solutions at an affordable price. The Ace 25x is retailing for $69 for the “single” package which includes the light itself, the dome diffuser, the Ace lock to cold shoe adapter, a hex wrench, and a charging cord. For an additional $26 ($95 total) you can get the “kit” with the previously listed items plus the light control grid, Ace Lock Mini Tripod, and Carrying Case. Similarly for the Ace 25c, it’s $99 for the “single” or $125 for the “kit.”

The Viltrox Luna series represents a significant step in cinema lens offerings with three primary models: the Luna 30-300mm T4, 42-420mm T5.6, and the anticipated 22-220mm T2.8. Each model serves different creative and technical needs for filmmakers. Below, we’ll dive into each lens’s specs, design features, and ideal use cases to help you decide which Viltrox Luna model might best suit your production needs.

Viltrox Luna 30-300mm T4: Versatile Long-Range Zoom

The Luna 30-300mm T4 was the first model in the series, debuting with an impressive 10x zoom range that caters to a wide variety of shooting scenarios. Designed specifically for full-frame cinema cameras, this lens is suitable for capturing close-up details and distant subjects in the same shot without sacrificing image quality. Here are some key features and benefits:

1. Wide Range & Compatibility: With a focal length of 30-300mm, this model is a great choice for filmmakers needing long reach in a single, adaptable lens. It accommodates full-frame sensors, covering an image circle of 46.5mm, making it compatible with a broad range of modern cinema cameras.

2. Constant Aperture: The T4 constant aperture is a significant advantage when adjusting focal lengths on the go. It allows for consistent exposure across the zoom range, which is crucial for scenes with dynamic movement or when changing perspectives mid-shot.

3. Focus Breathing Control: This model minimizes focus breathing, making it ideal for video work, as it keeps the field of view steady when adjusting focus.

4. Build & Handling: The Luna 30-300mm T4 lens has a durable, weather-sealed construction. Its design caters to cinematographers who require reliable equipment in diverse conditions. The ergonomic layout and robust zoom and focus rings offer a smooth, controlled feel, adding to its appeal for narrative, documentary, and wildlife applications.

Viltrox Luna 42-420mm T5.6: Extended Reach and Specialized Utility

The Luna 42-420mm T5.6 offers a unique option for filmmakers focusing on extreme telephoto needs, with an even greater zoom range than the 30-300mm. While it shares similar core design elements, the 42-420mm lens is slightly more specialized in terms of its target use cases, most notably with a 65mm image circle, making it usable with Alexa 65 and URSA 17k cameras. Let’s look at some defining features:

1. 10x Telephoto Zoom: The 42-420mm zoom range excels in settings where extreme reach is essential, such as wildlife or sports filming. This lens can provide close-ups from a distance without intruding on a scene, making it perfect for capturing natural behavior in animals or live-action sports from the sidelines.

2. Consistent T5.6 Aperture: Although slightly narrower in maximum aperture than the 30-300mm, the T5.6 constant aperture allows for predictable exposure adjustments throughout its extensive zoom range. This can be advantageous when shooting in brightly lit environments where depth of field needs to be balanced.

3. Large Image Circle: The 42-420mm model is designed for large sensors, covering an image circle of up to 65mm. This makes it compatible with both full-frame and large-format sensors, enhancing its versatility across camera systems. r

4. Adjustable Back Focus: An additional benefit of the 42-420mm lens is its adjustable back focus feature, enabling cinematographers to fine-tune the focus plane to maintain sharpness. This flexibility is especially helpful when working at long focal lengths where small adjustments can significantly impact image clarity.

5. Specialized Niche Applications: Due to its reach, the 42-420mm lens is particularly useful in niche cinematography, such as documentary or wildlife filming, where being far from the subject is either practical or required. It may also find use in surveillance or nature videography where image quality and long focal range are primary requirements.

Viltrox Luna 22-220mm T2.8: The Upcoming Super 35 Zoom

While it has not yet been released, Viltrox has announced a third model in the series: the Luna 22-220mm T2.8, designed for Super 35 cinema cameras. With a unique focal range and aperture, this model aims to fill a niche in cinematography that balances light intake, zoom reach, and Super 35 compatibility. Here’s what we know so far:

1. Fast T2.8 Aperture: One of the standout features of the upcoming 22-220mm lens is its T2.8 aperture, which is relatively fast compared to the other Luna models. This wider aperture offers better performance in low-light conditions and provides more control over depth of field, making it ideal for dramatic shots with selective focus.

2. Super 35 Sensor Compatibility: Catering to the Super 35 market, this model is well-suited for television production, independent filmmaking, and scenarios where Super 35 sensors are the standard.

3. Potential Applications: With its combination of fast aperture and flexible zoom range, the 22-220mm is likely to become a favorite among Super 35 users needing versatile, fast glass. The zoom range from 22-220mm would allow for effective storytelling flexibility in various settings, from interior dialogues to medium-distance action shots.

Viltrox’s Luna series offers options that can cover a wide array of filming situations, whether the demand is for long-range reach, versatile zoom, or optimal light intake. With this trio, Viltrox continues to position itself as a compelling choice for serious cinematographers looking for quality, flexibility, and specialized capabilities in zoom lenses.

We don’t have exact pricing, but it’s estimated the 30-300 will land between $85,000 to $100,000. The 42-420 is estimated between $150,000 to $200,000. No pricing information is currently available for the 22-220.
